What is Cleethorpes Pier Like?
The pier was first about 1200 feet (365 meters) long. This was because the sea goes very far out at low tide. It had a wooden deck and a building called a pavilion, built in 1888. Strong iron poles held up the whole structure. During the Second World War, a part of the pier was removed. This was done to stop any enemy forces from using it if they tried to invade.
The Pier's Story: A Timeline
Ideas for Cleethorpes Pier started in 1866. Construction began in 1867. A company called Head Wrightson built the pier. It cost £8,000 to build. The Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway company paid for it. They later bought the pier completely.
Changes Over the Years
The first pavilion building on the pier burned down in 1903. But a new one was built in 1905. This new pavilion was halfway along the pier. There were also shops and a cafeteria near the entrance. The pavilion was a popular place for dances and concerts. In 1936, the local council took over owning the pier.
In 1968, £50,000 was spent to improve the pier. They added a concert hall with 600 seats, a cafe, and a bar. Many different events were held there. These included summer shows, wrestling, and dance festivals. However, the council later sold the pier in 1981.
A new owner, Mark Mayer, bought the pier for £10,000. He spent £300,000 to fix it up. It reopened as 'Pier 39' in 1985. This was a modern nightclub. Later, a shelter was added for people waiting to enter the nightclub. The pier was also made wider.
Recent Times
The pier closed in 2010. But a local businessman, Bryn Ilsey, bought it in May 2010. He then leased it out to others. The Pier nightclub reopened in November 2010. It had been refurbished with £200,000. It was open both day and night.
The pier closed again in September 2011. This was due to some problems. It reopened on December 1, 2011. A local businessman, Alistair Clugston, owned it then. The front part became the Tides Bar & Restaurant. The large hall continued as a nightclub. However, it only allowed people aged 21 and over.
In 2012, Cleethorpes Pier was put up for sale. It did not sell at auction in 2013. But a group of partners later bought it. However, they failed to meet the sale conditions. So, the pier was put up for sale again.
In July 2013, local businessman Bryan Huxford bought the pier. He wanted it to be used by the community. The pier reopened to the public. Plans for new developments were shared in November. The pier closed in late 2014 for renovations. Work started in March 2015. It reopened in August 2015.
The pier then had the 1873 restaurant for fine dining. It also had The Promenade, a pub with traditional food. The Victoria Tea room offered afternoon tea. The pier also hosted live entertainment. Many events like weddings and parties were held there.
In September 2016, the pier was put up for sale again. The Papa's Fish and Chip chain bought it in December 2016. It reopened for the 2017 season. At that time, it claimed to be the biggest fish and chip restaurant in the country.
