Clem, Oregon facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Clem is a small, undeveloped place in Gilliam County, Oregon, United States. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's a collection of homes or buildings that are not officially part of a city. Clem is located about 1903 feet (580 meters) above sea level.

How Clem Got Its Name

Clem was named after a man named Clemens Augustus Danneman. He was born in Germany and moved to Oregon in 1879. Mr. Danneman owned a large ranch in Gilliam County, and the community was named in his honor.

Clem's Past and Present

For many years, Clem had its own post office. It was open from November 1884 until April 1937, helping people send and receive mail. Clem was also an important stop on the Condon branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. This railroad helped connect the community to other places and transport goods.

Today, Clem is located on Oregon Route 19. It is about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) southeast of another small community called Mikkalo.
