For a while, Mikkalo was also connected by a train line. It was on the Condon Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. Trains were a very important way to travel and move goods back then.

One notable event in Mikkalo's history was a fire. On March 28, 1921, the Mikkalo Farmers Elevator caught fire. An elevator like this is a tall building used to store grain from farms.
