Clement Throckmorton (born around 1512 – died 1573) was an important English landowner and a Member of Parliament during the mid-1500s. This means he was chosen to represent people in the country's law-making body, called Parliament.

Who Was Clement Throckmorton?

Clement Throckmorton came from a well-known family in Warwickshire, England. His father was Sir George Throckmorton, and his mother was Catherine Vaux. He had an influential brother, Sir Nicholas Throckmorton, who was a diplomat (someone who represents their country in other nations). Clement was also a cousin to King Henry VIII's last wife, Catherine Parr.

His Role in Parliament

Clement Throckmorton was a Member of Parliament for many years. He served in nine different Parliaments between 1542 and 1572. He represented his home area of Warwickshire twice and the town of Warwick four times. He also represented other towns like Devizes, Sudbury, and West Looe.

His Military and Business Life

Besides his political work, Clement Throckmorton also had a successful military career. In 1553, he was given the important job of Constable of Kenilworth Castle. He held this position until he passed away.

He also became wealthier by buying land and through successful trading. In 1554, he bought a large estate called Haseley in Warwickshire. This land had previously been taken by the King from its former owner. Clement was also one of the people who helped start the Muscovy Company. This was a famous trading company that did business with Russia.

His Family and Beliefs

Clement Throckmorton was a Protestant, but he held moderate views. This means he wasn't extreme in his religious beliefs. Even though one of his brothers remained Catholic, Clement stayed loyal to Queen Mary when she was on the throne.

His son, Job Throckmorton, later became a strong supporter of the Puritan movement. Puritans were a group of Protestants who wanted to make the Church of England simpler. Job was very involved in publishing secret writings that criticized the church.

Clement Throckmorton married Katherine Neville. She was the daughter of Sir Edward Neville and Eleanor Windsor.
