Life of Cleobulus

It is said that Cleobulus traveled to Egypt to study philosophy. He was known for being very strong and handsome. Cleobulus lived to be about seventy years old.

Cleobulus had a daughter named Cleobulina. She was also a very talented poet. Cleobulina was famous for writing clever riddles in verse.

What Cleobulus Wrote and Said

Cleobulus wrote different kinds of poems, including riddles. Some people even thought he wrote the famous words on the tomb of Midas. Here is what it said:

I am a brazen maiden lying here
Upon the tomb of Midas. And as long
As water flows, as trees are green with leaves,
As the sun shines and eke the silver moon,
As long as rivers flow, and billows roar,
So long will I upon this much wept tomb,
Tell passers by, "Midas lies buried here.
