Cleveland has an old cemetery. It is also home to a famous rodeo. This rodeo is the oldest one in Washington state! It has been completely updated and looks great.
On the rodeo grounds, you can find a very special carousel. This carousel is 100 years old! It was made by the Spillman company. Thanks to grants and private donations, this carousel has also been fully restored.
The closest town to Cleveland is Bickleton. Every year, on the second weekend in June, Cleveland holds an annual rodeo. They also celebrate "Pioneer Days." During this time, the old carousel is brought back to life! It works just like it did in 1907. The original carousel horses are kept safe in the Museum in Bickleton.
The Famous Carousel
The carousel in Cleveland has an interesting history. According to R. Bollinger, who used to own The Oaks amusement park, this carousel was one of the first rides at The Oaks when it opened in 1905. It was sold to the Bickleton/Cleveland group in 1928. It came with its band organ and ticket booth.
Over the years, the way the carousel moved changed. At first, donkeys or small horses pulled it. Later, a steam engine was used, and then a tractor engine. The communities of Bickleton and Cleveland have worked hard to keep this special carousel in good condition for many years.
