Cleveland is a small, unincorporated community in Jackson Township, Hancock County, Indiana. An unincorporated community is a place where people live that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
History of Cleveland
Cleveland has an interesting past! It wasn't always known by its current name.
When the community was first started in 1834, it was called Portland. At that time, people carefully planned out the area, deciding where streets and buildings would go. This process is called "platting."
Later, in 1855, the community was officially renamed Cleveland.
For many years, Cleveland even had its own post office. It opened in 1852, helping people send and receive mail. However, the post office closed down in 1903.
