About the Book: Cows That Type

This book is a great example of children's literature. It teaches about fairness and speaking up. The story was so popular that it was also released as a book and CD set. The CD version was narrated by the famous actor Rik Mayall.

The CD had three different tracks. Two tracks featured the story being read with music and sound effects. The third track was just the story without any extra sounds.

What's the Story About?

The story begins when Farmer Brown hears strange typing sounds. They are coming from his barn! He soon finds out that his cows have found an old typewriter. They are using it to write letters to him.

The cows' first request is for electric blankets. They want to stay warm at night. Farmer Brown says no to their demand. So, the cows decide to go on strike! They refuse to give milk until they get their blankets.

The Animals' Strike

Soon, the cows type another letter. This time, they ask for blankets for the hens too. Farmer Brown refuses again. Because of this, the hens join the strike. They refuse to lay any eggs.

Farmer Brown realizes he has a big problem. He cannot run his farm without milk and eggs. He decides to write a letter back to the animals. He uses his own typewriter. He tells them they do not need blankets. He reminds them their job is to produce milk and eggs.

The cows hold an important meeting. All the other farm animals gather around the barn door. They want to see what will happen. The cows seem to come up with a plan. They promise Farmer Brown something. If he gives them the blankets, they will give him their typewriter.

A duck, who was leading the strike, agrees to help. The duck will deliver the typewriter. But only after the cows and hens get their blankets.

A Surprising Twist

Farmer Brown thinks this is a fair deal. He leaves the electric blankets for the cows. Then he waits for the duck to bring the typewriter. But the duck does not bring the typewriter.

Instead, the ducks send Farmer Brown a new letter. It says their pond is boring. They would like a diving board! This shows that the animals are very clever.

Other Versions of the Story

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type has been so successful that it inspired other projects. There have been animated TV specials based on the book series.
