Public Service and Career

In 1859, he became a member of the Georgia House of Representatives. This is where laws are made for the state of Georgia.

During the American Civil War, he served in the Confederate States Army. Later, from 1864 to 1865, he represented Georgia in the Second Confederate Congress. This was like a national government for the Southern states during the war.
