Becoming Chairman

Clifford Birdinground became the Chairman of the Crow Tribe in 2000. He ran for the position against the previous leader, Clara Nomee. Even though she had faced some legal issues, she was still able to run for office again.

In the May 2000 election, Birdinground won by a large margin. He received 67% of the votes, defeating Clara Nomee. This victory made him the new leader of the Crow Tribe.

Changes in Office

When Clifford Birdinground took office in 2000, he made several important changes. He decided to cancel many agreements and deals that the previous administration had made. He also changed many people working for the tribal government. About 130 employees were replaced during this time.

End of Term

Clifford Birdinground's time as Chairman ended in September 2002. He stepped down from his position. After his resignation, he faced legal consequences related to his time in office. He was ordered to serve time in prison starting in 2007.

After Birdinground resigned, the Vice Chairman, Vincent Goes Ahead Jr., became the interim leader. An election was held in November 2002 to choose a new permanent Chairman. Vincent Goes Ahead Jr. ran in this special election but was defeated by Carl Venne. Carl Venne received more votes and was sworn in as the new Chairman on November 12, 2002. Vincent Goes Ahead Jr. continued to serve as Vice Chairman until his term ended in 2004.
