Early Work
From 1980 to 1985, Johnson worked as a trial attorney for the United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. In this job, he helped protect the basic rights and freedoms of all Americans.
Working in Indiana
In 1986, he joined the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. He became an Assistant United States Attorney. This means he was one of the lawyers who helped the main U.S. Attorney in that region.

- From 2010 to 2020, he was the first assistant United States attorney. This made him the second-in-command, helping to lead the entire office.
- For several months in 2017, he served as the acting United States attorney. This meant he filled in as the top federal lawyer for the area.
Johnson retired from this office in August 2020.
