Clifford L. Muse, Jr. was born on April 27, 1944, in Hightstown, New Jersey. He is an African American historian and an archivist. An archivist is someone who collects and preserves important historical documents and records.

Currently, Mr. Muse works at Howard University. He is the university's archivist and an associate director at the Moorland–Spingarn Research Center. He is well known for his work in making the archive profession more diverse. He also researches and writes about important figures like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Frederick Douglass.

His Career

Clifford L. Muse, Jr. grew up in Hightstown, New Jersey. He went to high school there. Later, he studied at Hartwick College in New York and Howard University in Washington, D.C.

He started his career working for the National Archives and Records Service (NARS). This organization keeps important government documents safe. He was a senior archivist for the project that managed the papers of former President Richard Nixon.

In 1981, Mr. Muse began working at Howard University. He has also taught history and information management for over 30 years. He teaches at Howard University and The Catholic University of America. His special interest is studying black history from all over the world. He has greatly helped build the amazing collection at the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center.

Clifford L. Muse, Jr. is a member of many important organizations. These include the American Historical Association (AHA) and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC). He is also part of ARMA International and the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History (ASALH).

He has been a member of the Society of American Archivists for his whole career. He played a big part in creating groups within the SAA that focus on diversity. In 1987, he and eight other members helped start the Archivists and Archives of Color Roundtable. This group works to support archivists of color.

Mr. Muse has written many articles and book reviews. He is especially known for his writings about Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King, Jr.. He has also written a lot about the history of Howard University. His articles, like "Howard University and U.S. Foreign Affairs" and "Howard University and the Federal Government," are often used by other historians.

In 1995, he co-wrote a book about Howard University's history. The book is called Howard in Retrospect: Images of the Capstone. He wrote it with Thomas Battle.
