Clinton is a small community and a census-designated place (CDP) in Missoula County, Montana, United States. It is part of the larger Missoula area. In 2020, about 1,018 people lived there.
History of Clinton
Clinton started in 1883 as a place where stagecoaches would stop. It also had a post office. Back then, it was called "Betters' Station". In 1892, the town's name was changed to honor C. L. Clinton. He was an important official for the Northern Pacific Railroad.
Where is Clinton?
Clinton is located in the southeastern part of Missoula County. It sits in the valley of the Clark Fork River. This river flows northwest for about 17 miles (27 km) to Missoula. Missoula is the main city and county seat.
Interstate 90, a major highway, passes right through Clinton. You can get to Clinton from Exit 120 on I-90. The highway goes northwest to Missoula and southeast for about 63 miles (101 km) to Deer Lodge.
The community covers about 3.4 square miles (8.7 square kilometers) of land. A small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.24 km2), is water. The Clark Fork River forms the southwestern edge of Clinton. Smaller creeks like Starvation Creek, Wallace Creek, and Dirty Ike Creek also join the river within the community.
People in Clinton
In 2010, there were 1,052 people living in Clinton. The community had 204 households. Most of the people living in Clinton were White (about 95.81%). There were also smaller groups of Native American, African American, and Asian people. About 2% of the population identified as being from two or more races.
The population included many young people. About 30.4% of the people were under 18 years old. The average age in Clinton was 33 years.
Education in Clinton
Students in Clinton attend schools in two different districts. Younger students go to schools in the Clinton Elementary School District. Older students, who are in high school, attend schools in the Missoula High School District.
