The Clinton Arena, also known as the Edward W. Stanley Recreation Center, is a famous indoor sports building in Clinton, New York. It's a special place because it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site!

About the Clinton Arena

The original arena was built in 1948-49. Sadly, it burned down on September 11, 1953. But don't worry, it was quickly rebuilt in 1954!

Building Design

The arena is made of strong concrete blocks and has two floors. It's split into two main parts. One part is the entrance area, which also has locker rooms and offices. The other part holds the big ice hockey rink. The roof uses a special support system called a Pennsylvania Truss. This helps keep the roof strong and stable.

Sports and Fun at the Arena

The Clinton Arena has been home to many exciting events. From 1954 to 1973, it hosted the Eastern Hockey League team, the Clinton Comets. It can seat 2,000 people, with space for 300 more standing!

Today, the rink is very busy. The Clinton Central School hockey teams practice and play here. Young players also use it through Clinton Youth Hockey. The Clinton Figure Skating Club also calls it home. In December 2006, the arena hosted a special "Hockeytown" event between Hamilton College and Utica College.

The Clinton Figure Skating Club

The Clinton Arena is also the home of the Clinton Figure Skating Club. This club is one of the oldest and largest figure skating clubs on the East Coast! It started informally in 1948, right after the arena was first built. In 1950, Edward W. Stanley, who helped create the arena, helped the club connect with the United States Figure Skating Association.

Kraft Hockeyville Win

On April 14, 2018, the Clinton Arena won the amazing Kraft Hockeyville U.S. Grand Prize! This big win meant the arena received $150,000 for upgrades to the rink. It also got to host a special NHL pre-season game. The Buffalo Sabres and the Columbus Blue Jackets played right here in Clinton!

Historic Recognition

Because of its history and importance, the Clinton Arena was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 17, 2010.
