About the Clinton Arena
The original arena was built in 1948-1949. Sadly, it burned down on September 11, 1953. But the community quickly rebuilt it in 1954. The arena is made of strong concrete blocks and has two floors.
It has two main parts:
- An entrance area with locker rooms and offices.
- A large section for the ice hockey rink.
The roof is supported by a special design called a Pennsylvania Truss system.
Hockey History and Fun Facts
The Clinton Arena has a rich history with hockey. From 1954 to 1973, it was home to the Eastern Hockey League team, the Clinton Comets. In 1977, parts of the movie Slap Shot were filmed right here!
The arena can hold 2,000 people in seats. There's also standing room for 300 more fans. Today, the rink is very busy. It hosts the Clinton Central School hockey team. It's also home to Clinton Youth Hockey and the Clinton Figure Skating Club. In December 2006, the arena hosted the first "Hockeytown" event. This was a game between Hamilton College and Utica College.
Figure Skating at the Arena
The Clinton Arena is also the home of the Clinton Figure Skating Club. This club is one of the oldest in the country. It's also one of the biggest on the East Coast! The club started informally in 1948 after the arena was first built. Two years later, in 1950, Edward W. Stanley helped connect the club with the United States Figure Skating Association. He was one of the people who helped start the arena.
Kraft Hockeyville USA Grand Prize
On April 14, 2018, the Clinton Arena won a huge award. It was named the Kraft Hockeyville U.S. Grand Prize winner! This prize gave the arena $150,000 for upgrades. It also meant the arena got to host a special NHL pre-season game. The Buffalo Sabres played against the Columbus Blue Jackets right here in Clinton!
