The Clinton House is a really old and important building in downtown Ithaca, New York. It looks special because it's built in the Greek Revival style, which was popular a long time ago. Today, it has offices and a cool school called New Roots Charter School. It's right next to the Ithaca Commons, a popular spot in town.

A Look Back: History of Clinton House

The Clinton House was first built way back in 1828 and 1829. It was designed to be a fancy hotel and one of the first places in Ithaca where people could have their offices. It was a huge building for its time, with 150 rooms! This was a big project for Ithaca, which only had about 4,000 people then.

Who Was DeWitt Clinton?

The building was named after DeWitt Clinton. He was an important person who served as the governor of New York state two different times. He was governor from 1817 to 1822 and again from 1824 to 1827.

A Famous Hotel

When it first opened, the Clinton House was known as "the most imposing hotel" between New York City and Buffalo. This means it was considered the most impressive and grand hotel in that whole large area!

Presidential Visits and Movie Stars

Many important people have stayed at the Clinton House over the years. At least four U.S. presidents have slept in its rooms. Also, lots of famous actors from movies stayed there. This was during a short time when Ithaca was a center for making films.

The Greek Revival Style

The Clinton House was built in 1831, which was right in the middle of the Greek Revival period in America (from about 1820 to 1860). You can easily see this style in the building. The big columns out front and the very large windows and doors are clear signs of Greek Revival architecture.

Clinton House Today

Today, the Clinton House is still a busy place. It is home to many different business offices. It also houses the New Roots Charter School, which is a special kind of public school.
