Exploring Clintonville's Past

How Clintonville Got Its Name

This community was first known as Indigo Head. This name came from the many indigo plants that grew in the area. Later, the name was changed to Clintonville. This new name honored the local Clinton family, who were important in the community. A post office served Clintonville from 1860 until 1921.

Early Education in Clintonville

Clintonville was home to a very important school called the Clintonville Male and Female Academy. This school was the first in Coffee County to teach students beyond the sixth grade. It was officially approved by the Alabama Legislature on January 11, 1860. This approval, called a charter, was later removed on March 28, 1873.

Clintonville's Role in History

In March 1862, a military group known as "The Covington and Coffee Grays" was formed in Clintonville. This group became Company F of the 33rd Regiment Alabama Infantry. Captain Daniel Horn led this company. Another part of the 15th Regiment Alabama Infantry also had members from Clintonville.
