Early Life

Clive Calder was born in 1946 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He grew up in this city.

Music Career

Clive Calder started his first music company in 1971 in South Africa. He worked with Ralph Simon to create it. In 1975, Calder and Simon moved to London. There, they started Zomba as a company that managed music artists and producers.

By 1978, Zomba grew to include publishing music. They also opened offices in New York City. In 1981, Calder and Simon created their first record label, Jive Records. Jive became very important for hip hop and rap music. This was thanks to new team member Barry Weiss.

Jive's success led to other record labels, like Silvertone Records in 1988. In 1990, Calder became the only owner of Zomba after a disagreement with Simon.

In the late 1990s, Jive Records became even more successful. They signed popular teen pop groups like the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, and Britney Spears. All these artists had songs that topped the music charts.

In 2002, Clive Calder sold the Zomba Group to a German company called Bertelsmann. The sale was for a huge amount of money: US$2.74 billion. Calder decided to leave the music business in 2003. He stayed on for a short time as an advisor to help with the change.

The Zomba brand eventually stopped existing in 2007. In 2011, Jive Records was also discontinued. Its most successful artists moved to other labels like RCA Records and Epic Records.

Other Investments

In 2018, Calder and his son Keith invested $46 million in a company called Cloud Imperium Games. This company makes the Star Citizen video game. Their investment gave them a 10% share in the company.
