What is Cloyne Court?
Cloyne is the biggest student house in the Berkeley Student Cooperative. The BSC is the largest student housing group in North America. Cloyne can house up to 140 students from UC Berkeley. Even though it's big, the students who live there run everything themselves.
How Students Run Cloyne
Students living at Cloyne help out with tasks every week. This is called a "workshift." Each student works about 5 hours a week. They do things like cooking meals, cleaning the house, and keeping the gardens nice. Since 2005, a special manager also lives there. This person helps the students with daily tasks.
Students cook a big dinner together almost every weekday. They also have a group brunch on Saturdays. Every Sunday, the students hold a meeting called the "house council." This is where everyone living in Cloyne makes decisions together. They vote on rules and plans for their home.
Cloyne's Special Theme
Like other BSC houses, Cloyne has its own unique theme. Since 2014, it has been an "academic-themed" house. This means it's a great place for students who want to focus on their studies. It is also a "substance-free" house. This means no controlled substances are allowed inside. Students choose to live here if they prefer this kind of environment.
Because of its academic theme, Cloyne has many study rooms. It also has a library filled with books. There's even a "makerspace" or "hackerspace" where students can work on creative projects. This is a special place where students can build and invent things.
Learning and Community
Cloyne often hosts talks by guest speakers. Sometimes, professors from UC Berkeley visit for dinner. This lets students meet their teachers in a relaxed setting. For example, Professor John DeNero from UC Berkeley often visited. He would talk about interesting topics like data science.
Cloyne's History and Art
Cloyne is famous for the colorful murals painted on its inside walls. Students who have lived there over the years created these artworks. The building itself is very old and important. It is listed as a historic place in Berkeley. It's also on the National Register of Historic Places.
