How Coal Creek Got Its Name
The community of Coal Creek has had a few different names over the years. When it was first settled, it was known as "Headley's Mills."
Later, in 1864, a postmaster named Samuel I. Snoddy changed the name to "Snoddy's Mills." This was recorded by the U.S. Post Office Department.
Then, in 1888, another postmaster, John D. Orahood, changed the name one last time to "Coal Creek." This is the name it still uses today.
Why "Coal Creek"?
The name "Coal Creek" comes from the nearby body of water, Coal Creek. This creek was given its name because there were natural deposits of coal found along its banks. These coal deposits were an important feature of the area.
