What is a Townland?
A townland is a very old way of dividing up land in Ireland. It's like a small neighborhood or rural area. Townlands are much older than counties or parishes. They have been used for hundreds of years to describe specific places. Coalpits is one of these traditional townlands.
Understanding Griffith's Valuation
Griffith's valuation was a big survey done in Ireland between 1847 and 1864. It was like a detailed list of who owned and rented land and buildings. The government used it to figure out how much tax people should pay. For Coalpits, the valuation showed that many people rented their land from someone named James Thewles. This record helps us understand who lived and farmed in Coalpits a long time ago.
