Coast at Lakeshore East, often called just Coast, is a tall residential building in downtown Chicago, Illinois. It is located at 345 East Wacker Drive. This building is part of a large development area known as Lakeshore East. It stands 51 stories high and is a place where many people live.

Coast was the eighth skyscraper built in the Lakeshore East area during the 21st century. It was also the first residential building in Lakeshore East to be completely smoke-free. This means smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the building.

Building Coast: The Story of Its Construction

The construction of Coast at Lakeshore East began in June 2011. The building was designed by an architecture company called bKL Architecture LLC. The main company that developed the project was Magellan Development Group. They worked with another company, JPMorgan Asset Management, to help fund the building.

The company in charge of actually building Coast was James McHugh Construction Co. This company had already built six other buildings in the Lakeshore East area.

Challenges During Construction

Building a skyscraper is a big job, and sometimes there are challenges. In May 2012, the City of Chicago told Magellan Development Group that they could not get permits for scaffolding. Scaffolding is the temporary structure used by workers during construction. This was because of a big meeting called the 2012 NATO Summit happening in Chicago. City officials wanted to make sure the area was clear and safe for the event.

Magellan Development Group also talked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Secret Service about this issue. After gathering information, they decided not to apply for permits during that time.

When People Started Moving In

The goal was for people to start moving into Coast by February 2013. By February 2013, offices opened where people could sign up to rent apartments. Residents began moving into their new homes starting in March 2013.

What's Inside Coast?

Coast at Lakeshore East is designed to be a comfortable and modern place to live. It has 499 apartments for residents. Besides the apartments, the building also includes other useful spaces.

Features for Residents

  • Retail Space: There is about 18,000 square feet of space for shops or businesses on the ground floor.
  • Parking: The building has a parking facility with space for 272 cars.
