The Coastal Evening Darner (scientific name: Telephlebia tryoni) is a fascinating type of dragonfly. It belongs to a group of dragonflies called Telephlebiidae. This special insect is known for flying around as the sun sets.
What Does It Look Like?
The Coastal Evening Darner is a medium to large dragonfly. Its body is a dark chestnut brown color. If you look closely at its wings, you'll see dark marks. These marks are near the front edge and at the very base of its wings.
Where Does It Live?
This dragonfly is found only in eastern Australia. When we say it's "endemic" to Australia, it means it naturally lives there and nowhere else in the world. You can often spot it near streams. It likes to live in places like rainforests or open areas.
When Does It Fly?
The Coastal Evening Darner is quite unique because it flies mostly at dusk. This is why it's called an "evening" darner! While many dragonflies are active during the day, this one prefers the twilight hours.
