What the Coat of Arms Looks Like
The coat of arms has a special design. It features a shield with an eagle behind it. Let's look at the details:
The Shield
The shield is split into two parts. The top part is red, and the bottom part is blue. This is called "per fess gules and azure" in heraldry.
In the middle of the shield, you will see the head of an aurochs. An aurochs was a very large type of wild ox that lived a long time ago. Its head is shown facing directly forward.
Around the aurochs head are other symbols, all in gold:
- An eight-pointed star is placed between the aurochs' horns.
- A heraldic rose is on the right side of the shield.
- A crescent moon is on the left side.
The Eagle
Behind the shield, there is a golden-brown eagle. This eagle has its wings spread out, but they are pointing downwards. Its beak and talons (claws) are red.
The eagle holds several important items:
- In its beak, it holds a golden cross.
- In its right talon, it holds a green olive branch. The olive branch often symbolizes peace.
- In its left talon, it holds a golden scepter. A scepter is a staff held by a ruler, showing authority.
These symbols together tell a story about Moldova's past and its hopes for the future.
