Cobmoosa was once a small community located in Oceana County, Michigan. It was named after a very important person: Chief Cobmoosa, a respected leader of the Odawa people. This place played a role in the history of Native American tribes in Michigan.

The Story of Cobmoosa

Who Was Chief Cobmoosa?

Chief Cobmoosa was a significant leader of the Odawa (also spelled Ottawa) Native American tribe. The Odawa people are one of the Anishinaabeg, a group of culturally related Indigenous peoples in North America. Chief Cobmoosa was known for his leadership and efforts to protect his people.

A New Home in Michigan

In 1858, the United States government helped the Odawa people move from Ionia County, Michigan to this new area in Oceana County. As part of this move, a log cabin was built for Chief Cobmoosa in the very spot that would later be known as Cobmoosa. This cabin was a symbol of the new settlement for the Odawa community.

Life in Cobmoosa

For a time, Cobmoosa was a busy little settlement. It had important places that people needed for daily life. There was a general store, run by two people named Cook and Wessel. The community also had schools, which were important for educating the children. A post office was also set up, making it easier for people to send and receive letters.

What Happened to Cobmoosa?

The community of Cobmoosa faced a challenge in 1916. A fire broke out and destroyed the post office. After this fire, the post office was never rebuilt. Over time, the community itself faded away.

Cobmoosa Today

Even though the original settlement is no longer there, the name "Cobmoosa" lives on. A beautiful lake in the area is still called Cobmoosa Lake. The land around it is also often referred to as Cobmoosa. The exact spot where the old post office stood is not known today. However, Cobmoosa Lake is located west of Walkerville, Michigan.
