Cockta (pronounced [ˈkòːkta]) is a popular soft drink from Slovenia. It's special because its main ingredient comes from dog rose hips. It also has flavors from 11 different herbs, lemon, and orange. The original Cockta drink does not contain caffeine or a type of acid called orthophosphoric acid.

The Story of Cockta: How It Started

The idea for Cockta began in the early 1950s. In 1952, a man named Ivan Deu, who was in charge of a company called Slovenijavino, wanted to create a unique Slovenian drink. He hoped it could compete with popular foreign soft drinks like Coca-Cola, which weren't widely sold in Yugoslavia at the time.

A scientist named Emerik Zelinka, who worked at Slovenijavino, created the drink. He blended eleven different herbs and spices to give it a new and special taste. The rose hip was a very important flavor in this mix. Cockta was first introduced to the public on March 8, 1953, at a ski jumping competition in Planica.

Who Owns Cockta Now?

In 2000, a food company called Kolinska bought the Cockta brand. This company is now known as Droga Kolinska d.d.. Later, in 2010, a Croatian company called Atlantic Grupa d.d. bought Droga Kolinska. So, Atlantic Grupa now owns Cockta.

How Many Cocktas Were Sold?

Cockta became very popular very quickly! In its first year, four million bottles were sold just in Slovenia. Ten years later, sales grew to an amazing 71 million bottles. From Slovenia, Cockta spread to other parts of Yugoslavia.

Cockta's Marketing and Ads

The first launch of Cockta had a very clever marketing plan. A young architecture student named Sergej Pavlin designed the first bottle and label for Cockta. He also designed the look of the delivery trucks and the cardboard boxes for the bottles.

Many older people in Slovenia still remember the posters from the first Cockta ad campaign. These posters showed a young woman with a trendy ponytail and blue eyes, holding a bottle of the new drink. The ski jumping event where Cockta was launched was one of the first times a sports event was sponsored in Slovenia.

In 2006, Cockta sponsored the MaxCards World Championships, which were held in Ljubljana.

In 2013, a survey found that Cockta was one of the top 25 strongest brands in Slovenia. This was based on how well-known it was, people's experiences with it, and how much they used it.

In 2019, a new version called "Cockta free" came out. This one has no added sugar. Cockta is available in different sizes, like small glass bottles, cans, and larger plastic bottles. "Cockta free" also comes in these sizes.

In 2023, Cockta launched a new orange-flavored drink called "Cockta Blondie."
