Cockta is a popular soft drink that comes from Slovenia. It's known for its special taste, which comes from dog rose hip. The drink also gets its flavor from 11 different herbs, lemon, and orange. The original Cockta drink is unique because it doesn't have caffeine or a common acid called orthophosphoric acid, which is often found in other sodas.

How Cockta Started

The idea for Cockta began in the early 1950s. In 1952, a man named Ivan Deu, who was the director of a company called Slovenijavino, wanted to create a special Slovenian drink. He hoped this new drink could compete with popular soft drinks from other countries, like Coca-Cola, which weren't sold in Yugoslavia yet.

A chemical engineer named Emeril Zelinka, who worked at Slovenijavino, was the one who created the recipe. He mixed 11 different herbs and spices to give Cockta its unique taste. The rosehip was a very important part of this flavor blend.

The very first time Cockta was introduced to the public was on March 8, 1953. This happened at a ski jumping competition in a place called Planica.

Who Owns Cockta Now

Over the years, the ownership of the Cockta brand has changed. In 2000, a food company called Kolinska bought Cockta. This company is now known as Droga Kolinska d.d.. Later, in 2010, a Croatian company called Atlantic Grupa d.d. bought Droga Kolinska, which included the Cockta brand.

How Many Cocktas Were Sold

Cockta became very popular quickly. In its first year, four million bottles of Cockta were sold just in Slovenia! Ten years later, sales grew even more, reaching 71 million bottles. Cockta then started to be sold in other parts of Yugoslavia.

How Cockta Was Advertised

The first launch and advertising for Cockta were planned very carefully. A young architecture student named Sergej Pavlin designed the first bottle and label for Cockta. He also designed other things, like the look of the delivery trucks and the boxes that held the bottles.

Many older people in Slovenia still remember the posters from the first Cockta advertising campaign. These posters showed a young woman with a trendy ponytail hairstyle and blue eyes, holding a bottle of the new drink. The event at Planica where Cockta was launched was one of the first times a company sponsored a sports event in Slovenia.

In 2006, Cockta helped sponsor the MaxCards World Championships, which took place in Ljubljana. In 2013, a survey found that Cockta was one of the top 10 strongest brands in Slovenia. This was based on how many people knew about the brand, had tried it, and used it.

In 2019, a new version called "Cockta Free" was released. This one has no added sugar. Cockta drinks come in different sizes, like small glass bottles, cans, and larger plastic bottles. In 2023, Cockta also launched an orange-flavored drink called "Cockta Blondie."
