Meet the Coelotrochus carmesinus, a cool type of sea snail! It's a marine gastropod, which means it's a snail that lives in the ocean. This little creature belongs to the Trochidae family, also known as 'top snails' because of their shell shape.

About the Coelotrochus Carmesinus Shell

The shell of the Coelotrochus carmesinus is quite small. It's usually about 5 millimeters (that's half a centimeter!) tall. Its width is around 8 millimeters. This snail has a shiny, crimson (deep red) shell. It looks a bit like a cone or a spinning top.

The shell is solid and has cool spiral lines on it. These lines are fine and go all the way around. The shell's color is often pale pink with bright crimson streaks. These streaks are especially noticeable on the second and third parts of the shell. The outer edge of the shell often has small white spots. These spots usually appear in pairs.

The opening of the shell, called the aperture, looks shimmery inside. The central part of the shell, called the umbilicus, and the inner lip, known as the columella, are white. The top part of the shell, or spire, is shaped like a wide cone. It's about one and a half times taller than the shell's opening.

Where This Snail Lives

This special marine snail is found only in New Zealand. It lives off the coast of Northland and East Cape. This means it is endemic to this area.
