The Coffee Beanery, Ltd. is a chain of coffee shops. It started in Flushing, Michigan. You can find their stores in the United States, Asia, and U.S. Territories. JoAnne and Julius Shaw founded the company in Dearborn, Michigan in 1976.
The Story of Coffee Beanery
In 1976, JoAnne and Julius Shaw opened their very first coffee shop. It was located in Dearborn, Michigan, at the Fairlane Town Center. They started by selling special kinds of coffee to people. The company grew quite a bit over the years. By February 2007, The Coffee Beanery had many locations. There were 131 stores in the United States. They also had 25 more stores in other countries around the world.
How the Business Works
The Coffee Beanery helps other people open their own coffee shops. They do this by selling "franchises." A franchise means you get to use the company's name and business plan. The company also sells equipment needed to run a coffee shop. This is how they earn most of their money.
Important Agreements
Sometimes, businesses have disagreements or legal issues. In 2006, there was a situation in Maryland. A state official looked into how the company worked with people who wanted to open franchises. The official asked The Coffee Beanery to let some Maryland franchise owners end their agreements. This was done without them having to pay extra fees. Later, in 2008, a similar situation happened in Illinois. However, a judge later said that some of these issues were like "buyers' remorse." This means people might have regretted their decision after buying a franchise. All these matters were settled by 2013.
