Coffin Island is a small island located in the Great Southern part of Western Australia. It sits about 300 meters (980 feet) away from the coast, near the Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve. This island is a protected area, meaning it's kept safe to help nature thrive. Coffin Island is about 28 hectares (69 acres) in size and is mostly made of strong rock called granite.

Amazing Animals of Coffin Island

Coffin Island is a very important place for birds! It's part of the Two Peoples Bay and Mount Manypeaks Important Bird Area. This area is recognized by a group called BirdLife International because it helps protect many rare and endangered bird species.

The island is a special breeding spot for great-winged petrels. These birds come here to lay their eggs and raise their young. Other seabirds, like flesh-footed shearwaters and little penguins, also have large groups (called colonies) living on the island.

Besides birds, Coffin Island is also a resting place for seals. New Zealand fur seals use the island to rest and warm up. In 1990, about 100 of these seals were counted on the island. You might also spot a few Australian sea lions visiting the island.

Plants of Coffin Island

Even though it's a rocky island, Coffin Island has enough soil to support some interesting plants. You can find areas covered in a type of plant called Berry Saltbush. There are also areas of heathland, which is a type of habitat with small shrubs and plants.
