Cohocton is a small village in Steuben County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 703 people lived there. The name "Cohocton" comes from an old Iroquois phrase that means "log in the water."
The Village of Cohocton is located in the southeastern part of the Town of Cohocton. It is also northwest of Bath, New York.
History of Cohocton
The village was once called "Liberty." However, its name changed to Cohocton when it officially became a village in 1891.
A special building called the Larrowe House is in Cohocton. It used to be the Town and Village Hall. This house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This means it is an important historical place. The Cohocton Historical Society bought the house in 2009 to help preserve its history.
Geography of Cohocton
Cohocton covers an area of about 1.5 square miles (3.9 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
The village is very close to Interstate 390, a major highway. Other roads like New York State Route 371, New York State Route 415, and County Road 121 also lead into the village.
Cohocton has a train line called the B&H Rail Corp. This line connects Gang Mills (Painted Post) to Wayland. The B&H also has a smaller track that goes to a business area on the east side of the Cohocton River. The main office and repair shops for the B&H are right next to the train line.
The Conhocton River flows south through the village.
Population and People
As of the 2020 census, the village of Cohocton had a population of 703 people. In 2000, there were 854 people living in the village.
Most of the people living in Cohocton are White. A small number are Native American or from two or more races.
In 2000, about 38.6% of households had children under 18 living with them. About 49.1% of households were married couples. The average household had about 2.68 people.
The population was spread out in terms of age. About 30.7% of people were under 18 years old. About 13.3% were 65 years or older. The average age in the village was 35 years.
