Where is the Cold Desert?

The Katpana Desert stretches across a large area in northern Pakistan. You can find its sandy parts near the Indus River in Skardu. The desert actually extends from the Khaplu Valley all the way to Nubra Ladakh and from the Shigar Skardu Valley towards Zanskar. However, the biggest and most famous parts of this desert are found in the Skardu and Shigar valleys.

Local Names and Location

Local people have different names for this special desert. They call it Biama Nakpo, Biama Thang, and Katpana Biama. The main Katpana Desert is located very close to the Skardu Airport, making it easy for visitors to see. Another significant part, the Shigar Desert, is found on the road leading to the Shigar Valley.

What Makes it a Cold Desert?

The Katpana Desert is called a "cold desert" because of its high altitude. While it has sandy dunes like hot deserts, the climate is very different. In winter, temperatures can drop below freezing, and the sand dunes often get covered in snow. This creates an amazing sight where white snow meets golden sand. It's a rare example of a desert ecosystem that thrives in a cold environment.

Exploring the Dunes

The sand dunes in the Katpana Desert are a popular attraction. Many people visit to enjoy the unique landscape, take photos, and sometimes even try activities like jeep safaris or camel rides. The contrast between the cold mountains, the flowing Indus River, and the sandy desert makes it a truly memorable place to explore.
