The Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, often called El Pilar, is a Catholic school in Madrid, Spain. Its name means 'The School of Our Lady of the Pillar'.

History of El Pilar School

How the School Started

El Pilar school was founded in 1907. It was started by the Society of Mary. This group is a Roman Catholic teaching order. They are priests and religious brothers. They still run the school today.

Becoming Co-educational

When it first opened, El Pilar was only for boys. In 1978, the school started to admit girls. Over time, it became fully co-educational. This means both boys and girls attend classes together.

Famous Former Students

Many important people in Spanish history have studied at El Pilar. One former student even became the Prime Minister of Spain. A Prime Minister is the head of the government in a country.
