(David) Colin Dunlop (born July 31, 1897 – died February 23, 1968) was an important leader in the Church of England during the 20th century. He served as a bishop, which is a senior leader in the church.

Early Life and Education

Colin Dunlop went to school at Radley and then studied at New College, Oxford, a famous university. During World War I, he joined the army in 1915. He served as a lieutenant with the 3rd Buffs regiment in France. After the war, he continued his studies at Oxford.

A Career in the Church

After his studies, Colin Dunlop became a clergyman. His first job was as a Curate at St Mary, Primrose Hill. A curate is a priest who helps the main priest in a church.

Later, he became a Chaplain to George Bell, who was the Bishop of Chichester. A chaplain is a priest who serves a specific person or institution. He also worked as a chaplain in Stockholm, Sweden.

Moving Up in the Church

Colin Dunlop then became a Vicar at St Thomas Hove and later at Henfield. A vicar is the main priest in charge of a church parish.

In 1940, he became the Provost of St Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh. A provost is a senior clergyman who leads a cathedral.

Becoming a Bishop

Five years later, in 1945, Colin Dunlop became a Bishop. He was made the Bishop of Jarrow. This was a very important role in the church. He was also an Archdeacon of Auckland, which is another senior church position.

In 1949, he took on another significant role as the Dean of Lincoln. The Dean is the head of a cathedral's governing body. He held this position until he retired in November 1964. For part of this time, he also served as an Assistant Bishop of Lincoln.

Important Contributions

In 1955, Colin Dunlop was chosen to be the first chairman of the Liturgical Commission of the Church of England. This group helps decide how church services are performed.

People who knew him described him as a "striking character." They said he was good-looking and had a special talent for giving powerful sermons. A sermon is a speech given by a priest during a church service.

Retirement

Colin Dunlop retired from his church duties in November 1964. He passed away a few years later, on February 23, 1968.
