Early Life and Junior Rugby League
Colin Scott was born in Charters Towers, Queensland. He is from an Indigenous background. Colin started playing junior rugby league for Souths Townsville. He even played alongside his future teammate, Gene Miles, when they were young.
Starting His Professional Career
Colin started his senior rugby league career with Souths Townsville. He first played for Queensland in 1979. In 1980, he moved to Brisbane and joined the Easts Tigers. That year, he was chosen as the fullback for the very first State of Origin game. This was a big deal, even though he was playing in a lower division at the time.
Playing for Wynnum-Manly
In 1981, Colin joined the Wynnum Manly Seagulls team. A year later, he played fullback in their big win. They won the BRL Grand Final against Souths Magpies.
Representing Australia
Even though Colin was Queensland's main fullback for three years, he missed out on the 1982 Kangaroo tour. This tour was a chance to play for Australia overseas. However, in 1983, he finally played his first Test match for Australia. He played fullback against New Zealand at Lang Park. This happened because the usual fullback, Greg Brentnall, was injured. Colin played 25 games for Queensland, including 17 State of Origin matches. But this was his only game for Australia.
In 1984, Colin was sent off the field during a semi-final game. This meant he could not play in the Grand Final.
Playing in England
In 1985, Colin moved to England to play for the Castleford Tigers. He stayed with the club for two seasons. In 1985, he played fullback in the Yorkshire Cup Final, which Castleford lost. The next year, in 1986, he was fullback again when Castleford won the 1986 Yorkshire Cup Final. Both finals were played at Headingley in Leeds.
State of Origin and the Brisbane Broncos
Colin played for Queensland in the Interstate and State of Origin games from 1979 to 1987. In 1986, he lost his spot as the main fullback to Gary Belcher. However, he returned to the team in 1987, playing on the wing. This was partly because Mal Meninga, a regular player, was injured. Colin played his last game for Queensland from the bench in an exhibition game in California in 1987.
In 1988, Colin joined the new Brisbane Broncos team. This team was new to the New South Wales Rugby League premiership. He played 14 games for them in their first season. This included their very first game, where they beat the Manly-Warringah team 44–8.
After His Playing Career
In 2000, Colin Scott received the Australian Sports Medal. This award honored his important contributions to Australian rugby league on the world stage.
