The Coliseo theatre in Eibar, Spain, is a special building. It was built in 1949 and designed by the architect Víctor Eusa Razquin. This theatre is a great example of expressionist and classicist styles. It also has some modernist touches on its front.

History of the Coliseo Theatre

Building Eibar After the War

The Coliseo theatre was built when the city of Eibar was being rebuilt. Eibar had been badly damaged during the Spanish Civil War. The government at the time had a plan to rebuild areas that were destroyed. This plan helped create many new buildings in Eibar, including the theatre.

The architect, Víctor Eusa, designed the theatre to fit in with nearby houses. These houses were designed a year earlier by other architects. Eusa made sure the theatre's look and size matched the buildings around it.

From Cinema to Cultural Hub

The Coliseo theatre first opened its doors in 1949. For many years, it was mainly used as a cinema. People would go there to watch movies until 1987.

In 1987, the cinema closed down. There were even plans to tear the building down. But a group of architects, the Basque-Navarrese College of Architects, stepped in. They argued that the building was important and should be saved. Their efforts stopped the demolition plans.

Modern Renovation and Reopening

In the 2000s, the Coliseo theatre got a big makeover. The outside of the building was kept the same. However, the inside was completely updated and made new. Architects José Miguel Martín Herrera, Fernando Oñoro, and Jorge Unzeta-Barrenetxea led this project.

The theatre reopened on March 23, 2007. It now has three different halls. The main hall is quite large, with 547 seats. It can be used for plays, movies, or music shows. There are also two smaller cinema halls. One has 84 seats, and the other has 74 seats. The Coliseo theatre is now a busy place for culture in Eibar.
