How the Theatre Was Built
The Coliseo Theatre was built after a difficult time in Spain. The city of Eibar was badly damaged during the Spanish Civil War. After the war ended, there was a big plan to rebuild many cities. The Coliseo Theatre was part of this important rebuilding effort in Eibar. It was designed to fit in with other new buildings nearby.
From Cinema to Cultural Hub
The theatre first opened its doors in 1949. For many years, it was mostly used as a cinema, showing films to the people of Eibar. However, in 1987, the cinema closed down. There were even plans to tear the building down!
But many people wanted to save the Coliseo. The Basque-Navarrese College of Architects, a group of building experts, stepped in. They argued that the building was important and should not be destroyed. Their efforts helped stop the demolition plans.
A Modern Makeover and Reopening
In the early 2000s, the Coliseo Theatre got a big makeover. The outside of the building was kept the same to preserve its original look. However, the inside was completely updated and made new. Three architects, José Miguel Martín Herrera, Fernando Oñoro, and Jorge Unzeta-Barrenetxea, led this exciting project.
The renovated Coliseo Theatre reopened on March 23, 2007. It now has three different halls. The main hall is quite large, with 547 seats. It's perfect for many kinds of shows, like plays, concerts, and movies. There are also two smaller cinema halls, one with 84 seats and another with 74 seats. Today, the Coliseo Theatre is a busy and important place for culture and entertainment in Eibar.
