Collab house facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A collab house or content house is a special home where people who create online videos and content live together. They make videos and other fun stuff for websites like social media platforms.

These houses are often linked to users of TikTok, which is a popular video-sharing social media app. That's why they are sometimes called 'TikTok houses'.

History of Collab Houses

The idea of collab houses started around 2014. A group called Our Second Life lived and made videos in their 02L Mansion. Later, in 2015, popular users of Vine (another video app) shared an apartment in Los Angeles.

Living close to other content creators helps a lot. They can support each other and share ideas. A good collab house needs lots of natural light. It also needs privacy from fans and neighbors.

Barrett Swanson, a writer for Harper's Magazine, described collab houses as "big, fancy houses." He said that teens and young adults live and work there. They try to become famous online. These houses became very popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many new ones started up.

The Clubhouse For the Boys in Los Angeles was a very large house. It was about 7,000 square feet and worth a lot of money. The people living there had to post three to five videos each week. These videos were for social media accounts linked to the Clubhouse. In return, they got free room and board. Outside investors owned the house. They took a part of the money the creators earned.

The popularity of collab houses grew during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Some articles in New York Times talked about these houses. They showed how different the creators' lifestyles were from what was needed during the pandemic.

In January 2020, the New York Times said that Los Angeles was seeing many new collab houses. Hype House was one famous group of creators. They lived in a large Spanish-style mansion. It was on a private street with a big yard, a pool, and huge living areas. Four members of the group lived there.

Hype House started in December 2019. By January 2020, TikTok videos with the hashtag #hypehouse had been watched over 100 million times.
