The Collegiate Church of St Peter and St Paul is an old church building in Kilmallock, Ireland. It's a special place called a National Monument, which means it's protected because of its history. People think it was built where a very old monastery once stood.

Where is This Church Located?

You can find this historic church on the south side of the River Loobagh. It's just north of the main street in Kilmallock.

A Look Back in Time: The Church's History

How Old is It?

The church was finished by the year 1241. Before that, around AD 600, there was likely an old monastery founded by a person named Mocheallóg on the same spot. You can still see the base of a round tower there, which was part of that early monastery.

What is a Collegiate Church?

This church became a "collegiate church" around the year 1500. This means it was a church that had a group of priests, called a "college," who lived and worked together there. They would perform daily services and manage the church's affairs.

Important Dates and Changes

The church was officially named after Peter and Paul in 1410. Later, in 1420, parts of the church, like the nave and transept, were changed by Maurice Fitzgerald.

Damage and Changes Over Time

In the 16th century, special carved tombs were added to the south transept. Sadly, the building was partly damaged during a conflict in the 1600s. By 1657, it no longer had a roof.

Even without a roof, the local Church of Ireland used the church until a fire in 1935. After that, it was no longer used for services.

Exploring the Church Building

Inside the Church

In the northwest part of the main church area (called the nave), there's a tower. This tower includes the bottom part of the original round tower from the very first monastery.

The church is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. It has a main hall (nave), a special area for the altar (chancel), and a side section (south transept). It also has three aisles and another side section (north transept).

Special Features

Look for a beautiful doorway from the 13th century on the south wall. The chancel area has five tall, narrow windows called lancet windows.
