Big Stores at the Mall
The largest stores in a shopping mall are called "anchor tenants." They are usually big department stores. These stores help bring many shoppers to the mall. Collin Creek Mall had five main anchor stores. All of them have now closed.
JCPenney
The JCPenney department store was one of the first stores at Collin Creek Mall. It was the only store still open when the mall officially closed. JCPenney decided to close many stores across the country. This store closed in November 2020. Its building was the fifth one to be torn down for the new development.
Amazing Jake's
This spot first opened as a Lord & Taylor department store in 1981. Lord & Taylor closed in 1990. Then, a Mervyn's department store took its place. Mervyn's left Texas in 2006, and the space was empty for a while. In 2008, it became Amazing Jake's. This was a two-story indoor playland and buffet restaurant. Amazing Jake's closed in April 2019. This building was the first to be demolished for the redevelopment.
Sears
The Sears department store was also one of the mall's original big stores. Sears closed this store in March 2019. This happened because the company was having financial problems. This building was the third to be torn down for the new project.
Macy's
This anchor spot first opened as a Sanger Harris department store. Sanger-Harris later joined with Foley's in 1987. The store was renamed Macy's in September 2006. This happened after Macy's bought the company that owned Foley's. The Macy's store closed on March 26, 2017. This building was the second to be demolished.
Dillard's
The Dillard's department store was another original anchor at Collin Creek. It closed its doors in January 2014. This building was the fourth to be demolished for the redevelopment.
Mall History
When Collin Creek Mall opened in July 1981, it had a special feature. It was called the "River Walk." This was a series of fountains connected by an indoor creek. Later, most of the creek and fountains were removed. Only a small fountain was left in the middle of the mall. Before the mall closed, plants were put in this last fountain.
The mall also had a "village" of small shops. These shops were along narrower hallways. In 1992, these shops were removed. That space was turned into a food court during a remodeling project. In 2008, the mall had a small update. It got new paint and new floor tiles.
In 2018, Centurion American bought the property. On July 26, 2019, Collin Creek Mall held a farewell party. It was a way to say goodbye to the mall. The mall officially closed on July 31, 2019. Demolition and redevelopment work began in September 2019.
Why the Mall Closed
Since Collin Creek Mall opened, the area around it has grown a lot. New roads like the President George Bush Turnpike were built. However, the mall faced tough competition. Newer malls opened nearby. For example, Stonebriar Centre opened in Frisco in 2000. This new mall affected sales at Collin Creek Mall.
A developer named Sam Ware had a plan to update the mall. His idea was to tear down part of it. He wanted to open up the creek underneath and add offices, a hotel, and homes. This plan did not happen. Instead, Centurion American decided to tear down the mall. They are now redeveloping it into a mixed-use center.
