Ohm Collins Chabane (born 15 April 1960 – died 15 March 2015) was a South African politician. He served as the Minister of Public Service and Administration. When he was 17, he joined the African National Congress (ANC). This group worked to end Apartheid in South Africa.
Early Life and Education
Collins Chabane was born in Xikundu Village. This area is now part of the Limpopo province in South Africa. He went to Shingwedzi High School. After school, he started studying at Turfloop University.
At age 17, he decided to join the ANC's special group, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). This group worked secretly against the Apartheid government. In 1980, he went to Angola for military training. He began his secret work for the ANC in 1981.
In 1984, Collins Chabane faced challenges for his anti-apartheid work. He spent time in prison for his actions. While in prison, he continued to learn. He earned a Diploma in Electrical Engineering. He also studied aviation. Later, he got a Diploma in Management from Tanzania.
A Life in Politics
After his release from prison, Chabane became a Member of Parliament in 1994. This was a very important year for South Africa. It was the first time everyone could vote. In parliament, he helped with laws about the country's rules, defense, and intelligence.
In 1997, he became an MEC for Limpopo. An MEC is like a provincial minister. He worked in the cabinet of Premier Ngoako Ramatlhodi. A cabinet is a group of top government officials.
In 1998, he moved to public works. He helped create the province's Roads Agency. This agency builds and maintains roads. Later, he became a Minister in the Presidency. This meant he worked closely with the President. He also helped organize Nelson Mandela's funeral in 2013.
Personal Interests
Collins Chabane had a passion for music. He developed this interest while he was in prison. He led a marimba band. A marimba is a musical instrument similar to a xylophone. He even recorded two music CDs.
His Passing
Collins Chabane passed away on 15 March 2015. He was 55 years old. He died in a car accident on the N1 near Polokwane. This happened after he attended a funeral.
