A Look at General Seregni's History
How the Town Grew
For a long time, since the 1800s, the land around General Seregni was used for farming. Farmers grew crops to sell in the markets of Montevideo.
In the 1940s, more people started moving to the area. This slow growth sped up in the 1970s. That's when it really became part of Montevideo's busy metropolitan area.
Homes for Air Force Families
During this time, new homes were built for people working in the Air Force. These homes were for personnel at the nearby Air Base N1. They were also for students at the Aeronautic Military School. More neighborhoods were added in the 1990s.
Today, General Seregni is often called a "dormitory town." This means many people who live there travel daily to Montevideo for their jobs or other activities.
Mennonite Community
In the middle of the 20th century, a group of Mennonites also started a community here. Mennonites are a Christian group known for their simple lifestyle.
