The Colonial Inn is a special historic hotel located at 145 Shore Road in Ogunquit, Maine. Its main building is a beautiful old hotel from 1890, built in the Queen Anne style. This hotel is important because it's one of the few old resort hotels from that time that is still standing and looks much like it did back then. It's so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which is a special list of historic places in the U.S. The Colonial Inn also has rooms in newer motel buildings nearby. Guests can enjoy a swimming pool, a game room, and a dining room that serves breakfast.
Discover the Colonial Inn
The Colonial Inn sits on a unique L-shaped piece of land. Shore Road is on its west side, and Beachmere Lane is on its north side. The Ogunquit Baptist Church is located just south of the main hotel building.
A Look at the Buildings
The main hotel building is a long, four-story wooden structure. Its longest side faces Beachmere Lane. A single-story porch runs along this side of the building. Near the middle of this side, there's a part that sticks out and is three stories tall. The northeast corner of the building is rounded. This building started as a smaller house around 1850. Over the years, from the 1880s to about 1920, it was made much bigger.
There are also some newer buildings that are part of the Colonial Inn. A two-story motel building was added in 1983. It extends south from the main hotel. Another two-story motel building, built around 1961, is located to the east of the 1983 building.
Just north of that, there's an old cottage from around 1900. It's a cozy, one-and-a-half-story house that looks out towards the ocean. This cottage used to be where the hotel owner lived. The hotel's swimming pool is located just east of the main hotel. It's also north of the 1983 motel building.
Why the Colonial Inn is Special
The Colonial Inn is very important to history. It is the only hotel from the 1800s in Ogunquit that is still a hotel today. It also still looks much like it did when it was first built. Many other old hotels from that time have been changed into apartments. Or, like the nearby Beachmere, they have been updated so much they don't look the same. The Colonial Inn shows us how places for tourists to stay have changed over time in this area.
