Loretto Heights Academy
Colorado Heights University

Colorado Heights University was a private university located in Denver, Colorado, in the United States. It was part of the Teikyo University Group, a large educational organization. The university first opened in 1989. It was known as Teikyo Loretto Heights University until July 2009, when its name changed to Colorado Heights University. Sadly, it closed its doors in 2016 because fewer students were enrolling.

A Look Back: History of the University

At the end of the 1800s, a woman named Mother Pancratia had a special idea. She wanted to create a school for women in the Rocky Mountain area. So, in 1886, the Loretto Heights Academy was started. It was a Catholic high school for girls. The main building of this academy is now the Administration Building of what became Colorado Heights University.

The Famous Administration Building

The Administration Building is a very old and important structure. It was designed by a famous Denver architect, Frank E. Edbrooke. This six-story building is made from red sandstone. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975. This means it's a historically important place.

Over many years, the school grew from a high school into a college. It started offering many different programs. These included teaching, nursing, business, and dance. The college also began to accept both men and women. The campus eventually had almost 20 buildings. These included a large theater, a chapel, a swimming pool, and student dorms.

Becoming Colorado Heights University

In 1989, Teikyo Loretto Heights University (TLHU) opened on the same campus. This new university focused on students from other countries. In 2009, its name changed again to Colorado Heights University. The Teikyo University Group, based in Japan, owned the university. This group runs many universities around the world, with over 70,000 students.

The Campus Grounds

The university campus had 20 buildings. It was built on 74 acres of land. This area was one of the highest spots in Denver. The main Administration Building opened in 1891. Its tall bell tower could be seen from far away. It became a well-known landmark for people living in Denver.
