Colour Heugh and Bowden Doors are two cool rock formations, also known as crags. You can find them in northern Northumberland, which is in North East England. These special places are protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The area is about 11.3 hectares, which is like 28 football fields! Experts say these rocks show some of the best examples of the ancient Fell Sandstone Group found anywhere in northern England.

Where are Colour Heugh and Bowden Doors?
These two rock formations are located in Northumberland. They are about 2.9 miles north-north-east of a village called Chatton. They are also about 2.6 miles west of Belford.
What do the Crags Look Like?
- Bowden Doors is a long line of crags, about 0.6 miles long.
- The rocks face west-south-west.
- They stand tall, between 7 and 15 metres high. That's like a two to five-story building!
- Colour Heugh is a bit smaller, about 0.2 miles long.
- It's located about 0.22 miles north of Bowden Doors.
- It faces the same direction as Bowden Doors.
The Amazing Rocks of the Fell Sandstone Group
Both Colour Heugh and Bowden Doors are made of sandstone. This sandstone belongs to a very old rock group called the Dinantian Fell Sandstone Group.
When you look closely at the rocks, you can see layers. These layers show how the rocks were formed a long, long time ago. They were created by rivers that flowed through the area. You can even see the shapes of old riverbeds preserved in the stone!
Rock Climbing at Bowden Doors
Bowden Doors is a very popular spot for rock climbing. Many climbers visit this crag. There are hundreds of different climbing routes mapped out here. This means climbers can choose from many paths to challenge themselves on the rock face.
