Columbus is a small, quiet place in Hempstead County, Arkansas, United States. It's not a city or town, but an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does.
Columbus is located about 15 miles (24 km) west-northwest of a larger town called Hope. It has a post office that serves the area with ZIP code 71831. You can also find an herb farm, a volunteer fire department, a small church, and a cemetery there. However, Columbus doesn't have many other businesses or services.
History of Columbus
Columbus was mainly a farming community for a long time. This means most people who lived there worked on farms. This was true until the 1960s.
In the past, Columbus had more businesses. There was a bank owned by the Wilson family. There were also several stores, including a general store run by David Mitchell. A general store sells many different kinds of goods. These old stores have since been taken down.
Columbus also had its own school. But in the 1940s, the Columbus school joined with the Hope School District. This is called consolidation. It means smaller schools combine with larger ones. The old school gym recently burned down, leaving only two doorways.
Some of the well-known families who lived in Columbus included the Caldwell, Wilson, Mitchell, Hawthorne, Downs, and Stuart families.
