The Blue Birds Take Flight: Team History
The name "Blue Birds" likely came from another local team. The Columbus Red Birds were a minor league team in the American Association. They played from 1931 to 1954.
Joining the Negro National League
In 1931, the Columbus Blue Birds were an associate team. This meant they were connected to the first Negro National League. They played some games with the league.
Later, in 1933, the Blue Birds became a founding member. They joined the second version of the Negro National League. Mr. WJ Peebles of Columbus owned the team.
Reports said Peebles had put together a "formidable aggregation." This means he built a strong team. The Blue Birds quickly became popular in Columbus. Some players from famous teams joined them. These teams included the Homestead Grays and Kansas City Monarchs.
Playing in the League
The Columbus Blue Birds started their 1933 season well. However, they faced tough competition. They finished the first half of the season in last place. Their record was 11 wins and 18 losses. This was in a six-team league.
The Team's End
The Columbus Blue Birds team eventually broke up. They joined forces with another team, the Akron Tyrites. The Tyrites were a strong independent Negro league team.
This new combined team then became the Cleveland Giants. The Cleveland Giants finished the rest of the 1933 season.
