History of Colyer
How Colyer Got Its Name
Colyer is named after Colyer's Sawmill. A sawmill is a place where logs are cut into lumber. This sawmill used to be near where Bubb and Colyer Roads meet today.
Early Buildings and Changes
Years ago, there was a building that served as both a general store and a post office. People could buy everyday items and send mail there. In the late 1940s, this building became a private home.
Churches in Colyer
Colyer once had three churches. Now, only the Colyer Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church is still active. It continues to serve its community.
Fun Things to Do in Colyer
Colyer Lake: A Place for Nature
One of the most popular spots in the Colyer area is Colyer Lake. This lake covers 77 acres, which is about the size of 58 football fields! It is held in place by the Colyer Lake Dam.
Building and Improving the Dam
The State of Pennsylvania's Fish & Boat Commission built the dam in the late 1960s. This helped create the lake. In 2017, the dam was updated and made stronger.
Hiking Around the Lake
When the dam was renovated, a new hiking trail was also opened. This trail is 2.5 miles long and goes all the way around Colyer Lake. It is a great place for people to walk, run, and enjoy nature.
