Centre Hall is famous for hosting a big event called the Centre County Grange Encampment and Fair. Most people just call it the "Grange Fair". This fair brings in tens of thousands of visitors every year. It happens during the last full Thursday-to-Thursday week in August.
The Grange Fair is special because it is one of the few remaining "tenting fairs" in the United States. This means many visitors stay in nearly a thousand "army-style" tents set up in rows across the fairgrounds.
The fair started in 1874. A local farmer named Leonard Rhone wanted to invite neighbors to a one-day picnic. He hoped to introduce them to the Patrons of Husbandry, an organization for farm and rural families. The fair has been held every year since then, except for 1943.
