Common eastern froglet range

The common eastern froglet (Crinia signifera) is a tiny frog that lives on the ground in Australia. It's super common and belongs to a frog family called Myobatrachidae. You can find these small frogs in many different places across southeastern Australia.

Where Does This Frog Live?

The common eastern froglet lives in southeastern Australia. Its home stretches from Adelaide to Melbourne, and all the way up the eastern coast to Brisbane. You can also find it in most parts of Tasmania. This frog is one of the most common frogs you'll see in these areas. This is because it can live in many different types of places.

What Does This Frog Look Like?

The common eastern froglet is a small frog, usually about 3 centimetres long. It can be brown or grey, with many different shades. Each frog has unique markings, and you'll often see a lot of variety even among frogs living in the same area.

You might notice a dark, triangle-shaped mark on its upper lip. It also has darker bands on its legs. Look closely and you'll see a small white spot at the base of each arm.

The frog's back (called the dorsal surface) and its belly (called the ventral surface) can look very different from one frog to another. The back can be smooth, bumpy, or have long skin folds. Its color can be dark brown, fawn, light grey, or dark grey. The belly is usually similar in color to the back, but it has white spots all over it.

How Does This Frog Live?

Common eastern froglets are very active, especially the males. Male frogs gather in large groups near still water or slow-moving creeks. They call out to attract females. Their call sounds like "crik-crik-crik." You can hear this sound all year round, whether it's wet or dry outside.

Eggs and Tadpoles

Female frogs lay about 200 eggs in small groups. They attach these eggs to plants that are underwater. The eggs and tadpoles can survive in water that is about 14 to 15 degrees Celsius.

The tadpoles are usually brown and can grow up to about 36 millimetres long. They develop quite quickly, but how fast they grow depends on the weather and water conditions. If the water is around 15 degrees Celsius, it can take anywhere from 6 weeks to over 3 months for a tadpole to become a frog. When they first turn into frogs, they are very tiny, only about 8 millimetres long!

What Do They Eat?

These frogs mostly eat small insects. They often eat insects that are much smaller compared to their own size than what most other frogs would eat.
