A Look Back: Hospital History
How the Hospital Started
Community Hospital of Long Beach first opened its doors in 1924. It was called Long Beach Community Hospital back then. It had 100 beds for patients and 175 doctors and surgeons ready to help. A local leader named Fillmore Condit gave $50,000 to help build it. The building was designed in a beautiful Spanish Colonial style.
Surviving the Earthquake
Just nine years later, in 1933, a big earthquake hit Long Beach. The hospital shook, but it was built strong and did not get much damage. After the earthquake, the hospital helped hundreds of people who were hurt.
Growing Bigger and Better
In the 1940s, the hospital added a new section. This made it bigger, with 150 beds. The 1960s and 1970s brought many new changes. The emergency room became twice as big. New units opened, like an intensive care unit (for very sick patients) and a coronary care unit (for heart patients). A nuclear medicine department also started.
Becoming a Landmark and New Owners
In 1980, the hospital was named a Historical Landmark. This means it is an important building from the past. In the 1980s and 1990s, the hospital had different owners. First, HealthWest bought it in 1982. Then, UniHealth took over in 1988. Finally, Catholic Healthcare West bought it in 1998.
More Services and a Community Effort
During these years, the hospital kept adding more services. It opened a center for brain and mental health, a special unit for newborn babies who needed extra care, and a cancer center. Its name also changed to Long Beach Community Hospital Medical Center.
In 2000, Catholic Healthcare West closed the hospital. The people living nearby were very upset. They worked hard for nine months in a group called "Save Our Neighborhood Hospital." Because of their efforts, the hospital reopened in 2001 with its current name. A local realtor, Charles Lane, helped a lot with this.
Modern Times and Reopening
Since then, the hospital has continued to grow. It added a 28-bed unit for behavioral health (helping people with their feelings and thoughts). It also opened a clinic for occupational medicine (helping people get better after work injuries) and a women's health center. In 2006, it received a special approval from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations for its good care.
In 2011, MemorialCare Health Systems bought the hospital. This helped keep it from closing again. In 2017, its name changed to Community Medical Center Long Beach. It kept improving under the leadership of Long Beach Memorial and Millers Women's and Children's Hospital.
The hospital closed again in 2018. However, a new agreement was made with Molina Wu Network LLC. During the COVID-19 pandemic in California, the hospital was greatly needed. It reopened on January 4, 2021, providing important hospital beds for the Southern California area.
