History of Como West

Have you ever wondered how places get their names? Como West has an interesting history!

How Como Got Its Name

Back in 1884, a man named James Frederick Murphy helped change the name of a postal area. It used to be called "Woronora." He helped rename it "COMO." This was a big step for the area!

From Como Heights to Como West

About 30 years later, in 1914, the higher part of Como, which stretched west to the Woronora River, started getting a new name. It was called "Como Heights." This name appeared in travel ads all over New South Wales.

Six years later, in 1920, you could see the name "Como Heights Estate" in ads for land sales. This showed that people were starting to build and live in the area.

Then, in 1926, a newspaper article mentioned the "West Como Progress Association." This group worked to improve the area for everyone living there.

Finally, in 1939, the name "Como West" officially appeared in public. It was in an advertisement for the Como West Post Office. That's how the area got the name we know today!

Challenging Times: The 1994 Bushfires

In 1994, Como West faced a big challenge. There were large bushfires that affected many parts of the eastern coast. During these fires, some houses and the historic Como West Public School were damaged. The community worked together to recover and rebuild after this event.
