A French Sécurité Civile Conair Turbo Firecat flying to fight a fire.

The Conair Firecat is a special airplane built in Canada. It's known as a water bomber because it helps fight big fires by dropping water from the sky. This plane was created from another American plane called the Grumman S-2 Tracker.

A newer, more powerful version is called the Turbo Firecat. This version uses modern turboprop engines, which are like jet engines that also spin a propeller. These planes were still active in 2013 in countries like Canada, France, and the United States. The Firecat can carry a lot of water, about 3,395 litres, in a special tank inside its body.

What is the Conair Firecat?

The Conair Firecat is an aircraft designed specifically for fighting wildfires. It takes off from an airport, flies to a fire, and then drops a large amount of water or fire retardant to help put out the flames. These planes are very important for protecting forests and homes from dangerous fires.

From Tracker to Firecat

The story of the Firecat begins with the Grumman S-2 Tracker. This was originally a military plane used by the navy to find submarines. It had two engines and was built to fly for a long time.

In the 1970s, a Canadian company called Conair Group decided to turn these old military planes into firefighting aircraft. They removed the submarine-hunting equipment and added a large tank to hold water. This clever idea gave the old Tracker planes a new and important job.

How it Fights Fires

When a Firecat is called to a fire, it flies to a nearby lake or airport to fill its tank. It can scoop up water directly from a lake while flying low, or it can be filled with water or special fire retardant at an airport.

Once loaded, the pilot flies over the wildfire. At the right moment, the pilot opens the doors of the tank, releasing all the water at once. This sudden downpour helps to cool the fire and slow its spread, giving firefighters on the ground a better chance to control it.

Where They Flew

Conair Firecats were used for many years in different parts of the world. They were especially important in areas with large forests prone to wildfires.

  • Canada: As the country where they were built, Firecats played a big role in fighting fires across Canada's vast wilderness.
  • France: The French Sécurité Civile (Civil Security) used these planes to protect their forests and land from fires, especially in the dry summer months.
  • United States: Some Firecats also helped battle blazes in the United States, particularly in states with large wildland areas.

Even though newer planes have been developed, the Conair Firecat was a reliable and effective tool for aerial firefighting for a long time.
